Reading

Science-Fiction and Fantasy

PDFE-mail

During May we will read some fun science fiction and fantasy stories from our literature textbook. Skills we will focus on are making inferences and identifying the point of view, theme, setting, and mood. Students will identify active or vivid verbs used in these stories and will write their own descriptive paragraphs using vivid verbs.

King Arthur Unit

During March we will be reading legends about King Arthur. Students will make an illustrated dictionary of medieval terms. We will read some stories together, and students will read one story with a group and act it out for the class. We will be practicing punctuation for writing dialogue. Students will then use the medieval vocabulary they learned to write a medieval dialogue.

Literature Cirlces Unit

In February students will be choosing novels to read silently during class. They will participate in a 4 week literature circles unit (similar to a book club) in which they will share responses to their reading weekly with a small group. The responses come from a 4-page packet. One two-sided page should be completed and turned in each week after the group meetings.

Reading Homework

PDFE-mail

Students are expected to read 480 minutes per month. This works out to about 2 hours a week. They should choose reading material that is at their level - not too easy or too difficult. They should record the names of the books and the number of minutes they read on the monthly log each week and turn it in at the end of the month.
