Chapter 9: Geometry (May)
Students have a study guide for chapter 9: Geometry. They may use it on the test in a couple weeks. We will be doing a fun project during May. They will imagine they are architects offering a design for the new church (or items to be used in the new church, like a baptismal font). They will need to calculate the materials needed and give a bid based on the real cost of brick, cement, etc. Using formulas for surface area, volume, perimeter, and area they will answer questions about how much stained glass is needed for various windows, how much brick for various walls, how much roofing material, etc. I will invite the architects hired for the new church to visit. If you or anyone you know is an architect, we’d love to see how you use math in your jobAwesome Online Resource!
If a student needs help with any concept there is a fantastic website published by Prentice Hall that provides videos that teach all the concepts from our book.
I HIGHLY recommend becoming famiar with this excellent resource.
1. Go to www.phschool.com
2. Enter the web code: aak-0099
3. Select "Homework Video Tutors" (at the top)
4. Choose the chapter, lesson, and concept to be explained
*Other very helpful tools on this site are practice quizzes and tests. These are nice because they give quick feedback on whether a student understands the concepts they need. There are also multiple enrichment resources that tie the concepts students are learning to the real world in interesting and practical ways.
